"When It's Time To Say Goodbye" John Fitch IV Column
In this column Cormier writes about saying goodbye to his son after settling him in at the college dormitory. He ponders the differences between saying goodbye to a son than to a daughter, who allows for more sentimentality. He comes to realize that all of their lives were filled with goodbyes and that all has already been said. This column was later reprinted in the St. Anthony's Messenger in the "1177 Main St. USA" column in November 1972.

"The Impossible Thank-You Note"
In this column Cormier writes on the impossibility of writing a simple thank you note to a mother. He writes of the great encouragement and warmth his mother offered him as a budding writer. He recounted movie plots with her on the weekends and shared his riskiest pieces with her. Included with the column is a photograph of Cormier's mother, Irma Cormier.

"In the Heat" in Sixteen Short Stories by Outstanding Writers for Young Adults
In this story, the narrator and his 15-year-old son Richy go to his wife's funeral. The narrator struggles to cope with his wife's death, especially unexpected reminders of her. While driving to and from the funeral, the narrator also recounts memories of his parents and, in the end, feels the need to revisit his childhood neighborhood. Richy copes rather well to his mother's death and shares with his father how he remembers his mother, not in the hospital or the coffin, but lying in the sun and dancing with his father.

Scholastic Scope Stories by Robert Cormier including "President Cleveland, Where Are You?" and "Protestants Cry, Too"
This complete Scholastic Scope booklet includes two stories by Robert Cormier along with fill-in-the-blank word puzzles, a word search, a crossword puzzle, jokes, a comic strip, and queries and advice from readers. Furthermore, readers will find a brief collection of fictional anecdotes about plagiarism. The booklet also includes a brief biography and introduction to the two Cormier stories set in Frenchtown. The introduction mentions how Cormier writes from his life experiences.
"President Cleveland, Where Are You?" is narrated by an 11-year-old Jerry who competes with the neighborhood kids to win a baseball glove by collecting President cards. When he has a chance to win, he sacrifices the win for the benefit of his brother.
"Protestants Cry, Too" continues with Jerry Renault's family, but focuses on Arnaud, the older brother, who decides to marry Jessica Stone, a Protestant, against his father's wishes. He enlists in the army beforehand and his father has a change of heart when he sees Jessica as a human, crying as Armaud leaves. Following the story are a number of questions and activities about writing letters.

"Pretend, A Verb: To Make Believe"
In this short story, Jerry's father receives a questionnaire attached to a letter from New York about an inheritance. The family spends the summer dreaming of the amount they would receive and that optimism carries them through a summer layoff and slim savings. Jerry's worldly uncle already knows its a hoax but argues that the whole family knew that to be true but wanted to dream anyway.

1177 Main St. USA, September 1971
In this column, Cormier recounts his wife calling him out on faking the music he is listening to in a previous column. He normalizes the behavior by recounting several instances where, as a parent, he must pretend to have good advice, know the answers, or feign bravery. Some manipulation of the truth is a part of realism and in the spirit of truth-telling.

In this column, Cormier writes about the age transitions all four of his children are experiencing: 4 to 5, 12 to 13, 15 to 16, and 20 to 21. Each stage is a different moment in time. Near the end of the column, Cormier talks of how parents also pass through different times and how watching a son turn to a man makes for a new friend, but to watch a daughter turn to a woman comes with a sense of loss.

In this column, Cormier writes of embracing middle age and the ease that comes from no longer worrying about the hustle and struggles of younger years. While he still feels like the same person, he also notes a disconnect with his aging body. He also recalls being 18 seeing his father sleeping on the couch and pitying him for his disconnect from the world. Now he is that father, content with those same circumstances.

Robert Cormier's letter to Miss Marilyn Marlow undated
In this letter to his agent, Cormier discusses current and forthcoming projects, particularly surrounding a potential novel on French-Canadians in New England. Cormier shows a remarkable degree of self-awareness in assessing his own writing, including its limitations and his disinterest in autobiographical writing. The short story "The Three Hundred Dollar Loan" referenced in this letter may have become "My Father's Gamble" published in The Sign, in which the protagonist's father takes out a loan for exactly that amount.
