In this column, Cormier considers a bride and groom. He thinks about the bride and the child she was (and continues to be) in the eyes of her father. He reflects on the giving away of the bride as a culminating goodbye after many others: when the daughter leaves for kindergarten or stops believing in Santa Claus.

An account of the resource
Here Cormier talks about his eight-year-old daughter. Much of the article consists of him offering various numbers that define her - her age, her weight, her height, etc. These numbers, this arithmetic terrifies him - for each day that proceeds she grows older and older. Eventually, she will no longer be his little girl. Just as her older sister, then 18, she will leave her childhood behind.

In this piece, Cormier considers three states - loneliness, shyness, and boredom - and the role they play in our lives. While loneliness has gotten more popular attention, boredom and shyness rarely appear in popular music or receive recognition as social diseases that affect all ages rather than personal dilemmas of the young.

This piece shares Cormier's daughter's reaction to her father's column that focused on her figures and arithmetic. When she tells him how embarrassed she felt, he thinks about how this would not have happened when she was younger and less aware of herself and others around her. One particular point of shame related to the fact that he shared her weight with the world.

In this column, Cormier discusses the new style guide released by the New York Times, particularly their recommendations related to gender-linked language. Of particular offense to him is the substitution of person for man and the use of the pronoun Ms.

In this piece, Cormier recounts how he received a letter from Gloria Steinem advertising the magazine, Ms. He reveals his consistent (if somewhat ambivalent) take on feminism. On the one hand, he states "I have never hidden the fact that I am an unabashed male chauvinist" juxtaposed with "Let me always be considered a dear friend of women." He wants beauty and chivalry, but he also seems to want women to feel free to pursue their own rights. A strange counterbalance of ideas.

An account of the resource
As with many of his Christmas columns, Cormier addresses the idea of Santa, Christmas magic, and the innocence of childhood. He admits never telling a child that Santa is not real but cannot defend his existence, just as faith or a joke cannot be explained without polluting its existence. Believing in Santa Claus keeps the child alive, so he laments the time that his children no longer believe.

An account of the resource
In this John Fitch IV column, Cormier laments the commodification of our heroes. Citing the example of the legendary Joe DiMaggio selling coffee makers, he argues that this consumerism robs our heroes of their mystery and mystique and that television makes for a more vulgar society.

An account of the resource
In this John Fitch column Cormier examines te sifting definitions of our culture's heroes, wondering why, for instance, the likes of Julia Child and Andy Warhol made a recent list. He concludes, however, that our choice of heroes ultimately reflects the times we live in, which, at that time, meant a veneration for famous athletes and celebrities from film and television, especially O.J. Simpson and John Wayne.

In this John Fitch IV column Cormier profiles Norma Klein, a writer for both children and adults and a self-avowed feminist. Cormier praises her character, sums up her writing career, and shares a bit about her personal background, which he notes with some surprise was fairly normal. He alludes to how old school chivalry does not negate one's potential existence as a feminist.
