"Meet The Bully" John Fitch IV Column
In this bi-weekly column written under the name "John Fitch IV", Cormier recounts his childhood encounters with an unnamed bully after hearing Jonathan Winters share his experience with bullies on a talk show. Cormier wonders whether or not bullies can grow up to be good people.

"The Days of Sweet Innocence" John Fitch IV Column
In this bi-weekly column written under the name "John Fitch IV", Cormier blends verse and prose to poke fun at our naïve innocence of the world as viewed through the lens of movie clichés. Amongst the roughly three dozen clichés are some on female beauty, heroism, the appearance of villains, and the actions of stock characters.

"The SOS Signals Not Always Noticed" John Fitch IV Column
Robert Cormier's adopted persona, John Fitch IV, articulates in this bi-weekly column, how closely related specific positive or neutral qualities are to those that are destructive. He claims that we misunderstand distress signals that reveal depression or potential suicide because people work to hide their feelings.

"Not Banned in Boston"
In this magazine feature for The Sign, a Catholic periodical, Cormier praises the efforts of priest Monsignor Russell Novello to bolster sex education in the Boston archdiocese. The sex education program he has developed with regional gynecologists focuses on educating parents and teens so that sex education can continue in the home and encompass more than anatomical and medical concerns. Dr. Lynch, one of the gynecologists, laments the ubiquity of sexual messaging in popular culture and mentions the rising attention to homosexuality in comics. Cormier reports on how teens of the 1960s are not shy about frank conversations about sex while their parents are less comfortable with the topic. The article closes with a discussion of the need for moral education as part of sex education and the controversy around public school sex education programs which might overlook moral concerns.

"Dear Dad"
This magazine article tells the story of several fathers whose daughters have left home for college. Interviews with sets of fathers and daughters echo themes of tension between fathers and daughters particularly regarding emotional intimacy and communication as well as newfound understandings of one another. A portion of the article details Cormier's memory of the night before his daughter left for college and he both faced the reality that she was not a child and recalled scenes from her childhood. The article also mentions the communication and letter writing habits of fathers and how they differ from those of mothers. Mothers focus on daily life, grades, and health while fathers talk about boys and political or social issues of the day.

The Toybreakers outline
This single page, typed, and marked outline of Toybreakers shows Cormier's customary global overview of a work in progress. This artifact shows Part 1, the only section of the book that exists in the archive. Cormier's handwritten notes indicate that the second half of the outline needs to be rewritten. He appears to be questioning the logical progression of Susan and Harriet's motives and actions.

The Toybreakers draft material
Ten stray pages of Toybreakers draft material show Cormier's handwritten edits. The content includes one sexually explicit conversation between Mr. Caller and Susan, a scene of Harriette home alone contemplating torturing Mr. Caller, Mr. Caller leaving money for Susan to find, and Harriette trying to convince Susan to continue speaking with Mr. Caller. Cormier types notes to himself of how to revise the scene between Harriette and Susan to play up Susan's desperation.

Tenderness draft with editor's comment
Twenty pages of typescript of Tenderness show extensive commenting and editorial markings. Pages are numbered in pencil but not all pages are consecutive. Editorial comments, presumably from Karen Wojtyla, discuss issues of continuity, suspense, perspective, and characters' behavior, motives, backstory and depth of internal thought. Comments also show an interest in the possibility of Eric redeeming himself and encouraging moments of increased ambiguity. The markings suggest making Lori more frightened and innocent and Eric more socially adept, confident and less monstrous as the novel comes to an end.

The nonconsecutive pages of the novel include scenes of disposing of Alicia's body, ejecting Lori from Harmony House, a phone call between Eric and Maria to arrange a meeting, feeding the swans, and Lori and Eric's drive to a motel where Eric begins an attempt at killing Lori. Also included is a section of the fairground scene, the incident at Mirror Lake, and Walter Clayton committing suicide.
